Master of Education Sciences
The School of Education offers a one-year Master of Education Sciences (MES) with a Concentration in Artificial Intelligence and Learning Analytics. The program provides graduate-level training in the emerging fields of AI and learning analytics, preparing students to apply advanced computational and data analytic methods to study and improve learning in educational and organizational contexts. Graduates are prepared for careers in schools, universities, educational technology organizations, industry, and the nonprofit sector. The program may also serve as preparation for students interested in pursuing doctoral study in related fields.
The program is delivered asynchronously online and consists of nine required courses completed over approximately 12 months on a part-time basis. Students are encouraged to participate in two optional in-person experiences at UC Irvine: a one-week intensive at the beginning of the program and a two-day capstone event at the conclusion of the program. Students who are unable to attend these events in person may participate remotely. Coursework is delivered online across the academic year and culminates in a capstone project. Students learn in a cohort-based environment that emphasizes collaboration, with opportunities to engage closely with faculty and peers throughout the program.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Students from any undergraduate major are eligible to apply; however, applicants should demonstrate preparation for rigorous graduate study involving statistics, data analysis, and programming.
Applicants are required to submit a UCI application, transcripts, a statement of purpose, a personal history statement, CV or resume, a writing sample, and two letters of recommendation. Applicants may optionally submit general GRE scores completed within the past five years; those who do not submit GRE scores should discuss in their statement of purpose other evidence of their ability to carry out rigorous quantitative analysis. Applicants who are not citizens of countries where English is the primary or dominant language as approved by the UCI Graduate Division are also required to submit scores from either the TOEFL examination or the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
