The Department of Health, Society, and Behavior (DHSB) is comprised of a multifaceted faculty with diverse backgrounds and training. The thread which unifies us is our focus on complex pathways linking social determinants and health, with an emphasis on health equity. The DHSB is composed of faculty with expertise in health disparities, social determinants of health, health policy, community-based research, biobehavioral health, health communication, and interventions. The topical areas of emphasis in DHSB closely align with the community health sciences, health behavior, and health policy domains of public health. Research and teaching in this department integrate empirical and theoretically informed perspectives spanning the social sciences to understand multiple levels of influence shaping health, behavior, health care, and interventions.

Faculty provide guidance and mentoring regarding both curricular and programmatic activities for the M.P.H. emphasis in Community Health and Health Equity and the M.P.H. emphasis in Health Systems and Policy. The department also operates the Ph.D. in Health, Society, and Behavior, and mentors students in the Ph.D. in Public Health in coordination with the Department of Population Health and Disease Prevention.
